We certainly think so.
As part of the Sporting Group, this breed has a lot of energy, requires a lot of exercise, and wants to be with people. These traits contributed to the need for rescue in the early years. People fell in love with the cute golden fluff ball only to realize later their lifestyles were a mismatch for the adolescent and adult version.
Their exuberant friendliness makes them lousy watch dogs, but Goldens are often at the top of their obedience classes, and their intelligence makes them excellent service dogs.
Typical Characteristics:
- Energy: Golden Retrievers are part of the Sporting Group, and as such, are typically high-energy dogs that will require plenty of exercise – a lot of it. They’re natural athletes and love to play.
- Friendly: Goldens love people and generally make excellent family dogs. They’re usually friendly toward other dogs, pets, and strangers. However, due to the nature of rescue, we do get Goldens that have come from situations or that were used as puppy mill breeders which create shy temperaments. In these cases, we may recommend a particular dog to households with older children or no children.
- Intelligent: Golden Retrievers are very intelligent and are generally very receptive to training.
- Devoted: Goldens are devoted to their people and live to serve their families. These dogs do not really tolerate being alone.
- Temperament: Golden Retrievers have sweet natures and make excellent therapy dogs. They are also very obedient and often stand out in obedience competitions. They also excel in sporting events and field work. As retrievers, Goldens do have a tendency toward mouthiness.
- Grooming: Goldens’ long beautiful coats also mean a lot of shedding, especially in the spring and fall. In addition to daily brushing, these dogs will need regular grooming (including feather trimming, paw trimming, etc.) that is probably best handled by a professional.
- Size/Health: Golden Retrievers are typically about 55 to 75 pounds and stand almost two feet at the shoulder. They have a high potential for weight gain, and sadly, they can be prone to various types of cancer.
Keep in mind that Goldens were originally bred to retrieve water fowl in icy waters. They still take that job seriously – retrieving. So they’ll retrieve… and in your house, that can mean anything, including socks and other small items that can be ingested and possibly lead to an expensive and sometimes fatal intestinal blockage. Family members must be mindful of this trait and avoid leaving small items within the dog’s reach.
These cheerful, friendly, sweet dogs captured our hearts and we’ve dedicated our lives to finding new homes for those in need of rescue.
